Stories that Matter is a celebration of our artistic work with diverse artists, communities, staff and partners during the last 18 years. Special thanks to Newcastle University (Fine Arts Dept) and The Passionist Fund for their support for this project.

The zine is a compilation of unique responses, images and photos from some of the amazing diverse artists, community members, staff and partners, including YOU that Skimstone Arts has collaborated with.

We have been asked to document and share why working with arts and diversity is important for the future and the difference it can make. Contributors have created their own page in the zine to tell their story of the difference working together has made on their own personal/professional journey.

Part 1

We asked contributors to respond to 3 questions;

What was your role? (artist, funder, partner, community member, volunteer)

What was significant to you about working with us? (A journey of discovery, of seeing others flourish, of trying something new, of leading you in a new direction, of being visible, of a specific memorable story or happening)

Why was this journey important to you?

Part 2

Artistic director Claire Webster Saaremets met with contributors over coffee, received written and videoed stories to include in the zine. Then on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd August 2025 (10.30am -3.30 pm) at the lovely HaJon Gallery Learning Space, together we worked with artist and print maker Theresa Easton to create unique pages with text and images.

Part 3

We will print 100’s of copies of the zine, with your story in it, and distribute them at our Celebration Event on 14th November at Star & Shadow, Warwick St, Newcastle upon Tyne NE2 1BB which you are warmly invited to. We will also send the zine to all our funders and partners.

Stories that Matter contains 48 powerful narratives, that seeks to inform the arts, community and political sectors, to understand the importance of arts and diversity and social action that is relevant in our society today.
